The backpacks include hats, gloves and hygiene items.

Thousands of young students in the Northland are staying warm thanks to a local organization. Volunteers with the Assistance League of Kansas City assembled 3,000 backpacks filled with warm clothes, hats, gloves and hygiene items.

It’s part of their Operation School Bell® program, which gives clothes and necessities to students in need. Normally, kids are able to pick out clothes in-person, but the pandemic has changed that.

“Just knowing that these are going to get into the hands of kids and they know we’re still here, still adjusting, it’s rewarding,” said Rita Pickering, President of Assistance League of Kansas City. “I think you’ll find they’re enjoying what they’re doing.”

Volunteers delivered the backpacks to 59 elementary schools in the Northland. Assistance League of Kansas City is composed entirely of volunteers who operate several programs helping those in need, from children to seniors.
