When Howe PreK learned they were about to receive a $1,000 “You Gotta Have HeART!” award as part of Assistance League of Greater Wilmington’s spring AL ACTION! project, Principal Leigh Ann Lampley was ecstatic. Howe, which opened last year, did not have an art program yet, but they were about to develop one.
“These funds will enable us to purchase supplemental supplies and equipment that will enrich the art areas of our classrooms,” Lampley explained. “Art in the classroom supports children’s development and learning in the areas of social, emotional, physical, language, and cognitive skills.”
Fast forward a few months and the school’s halls are alive with the children’s creations.
In a unique project combining a read-aloud activity and art extension, the entire school focused on the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. After hearing teachers read the book, each student in the school created a personal dot using the new paints, brushes and paper bought with the funds provided by our chapter.
“Thank you again for the gracious donation to help fill our art supplies in our classrooms at Howe PreK,” wrote Lampley in a thank you note to the chapter. “We are so grateful!”
Howe was one of five elementary and pre-K schools to receive the award this year.
