Volunteers of Assistance League of Montgomery County met to assemble, sew, stuff, dress and distribute hand-crafted dolls for Montgomery County agencies whose personnel counsel children in area schools. Some agencies use the dolls for grief counseling and hospice summer camps for children. The dolls are dressed in handmade clothes, and the hair is carefully crafted in a variety of colors. The faces of the dolls have a smiling face on one side and a sad face on the other side. This provides the counselors with a tool to encourage children to begin to express their feelings, both happy and sad, during difficult times. In recent years the program has been expanded to provide the “comfort” dolls to special needs individuals, as well as those suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia.
