The Literacy Library at Ed White E-STEM Magnet School has over 1000 books that needed to be counted, sorted, and shelved. It would have taken Nicole Morales, the Literacy Coach, 6 months to do this by herself. She needed help.
The request was put out to the Assisteens of the Bay Area and they answered the call. Several members came and began working immediately. They lifted and sorted books, and counted and catalogued them. They organized file cabinets. They purged old books that were mildewed. The Literacy Library was in place in two days and available for teachers the first day of school.
“We were overwhelmed by the work ethic of these young ladies,” stated Dr. Laura Mackay, Science Coach and STEM Liaison. It was an amazing show of support and we are so grateful.” Dr. Mackay remarked that the Literacy Library was funded by the school district and the campus PTA. They hope to buy new sets of books this year. “Hopefully, the Assisteens will be available to help again!” she added.
