In the early hours of a Saturday morning, a fire devastated an apartment complex in Webster, destroying over 30 units. The apartment manager called the Red Cross and local churches for assistance. One church subsequently recommended Assistance League® of the Bay Area be contacted for support.
Operation School Bell®‘s leadership, the chapter’s largest philanthropic program, quickly coordinated with the school district to determine the number of students impacted by the fire. By midday the following Monday, these students were given new school clothing through the philanthropic program’s Shop and Deliver initiative.
It was discovered the parents of these students had similarly lost their clothing in the incident. The chapter’s Ready for Work philanthropic program intervened to supply clothing for adult victims by selecting items from its resale shop, and a few pieces of furniture.
Two philanthropic initiatives collaboratively provided essential resources to families during a period of significant loss and trauma.
