New Books Promote Literacy

Assistance League of Bend gave away 174 books to children in need at the recent “Page to Screen” event at the Tower Theatre in Bend. The Tower Theatre Foundation’s “Page to Screen” program offers 4 free film screenings throughout the year that show films based on literary titles to benefit youth and their families. They partner with Title One Elementary schools to create an out of the school opportunity for their students and families to gather and enjoy a night at the movies. Every child who attends also receives free books thanks to Assistance League of Bend’s Literacy Program.  Students from Silver Rail Elementary School were invited to a this free screening of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The children were very excited to be able to pick out two new books to take home. In addition Assistance League of Bend held a raffle drawing for two Harry Potter books and four Harry Potter magnetic bookmarks. This series is made possible by a partnership with Assistance League of Bend,  Deschutes Public Library, and the Tower Theatre.
