Two students admire their new clothes while Assistance League of Birmingham assist them during Operation School Bell.

Operation School Bell®

Members of Assistance League purchase, fit and distribute new clothing, hygiene kits and books to school children in need referred by area school counselors. Elementary students, grades K – 5, visit our store in Homewood. Middle School students, grades 6-8, visit local clothing stores and with the help of their “personal shoppers”, select new clothing, including socks and underwear. Their smiles as they leave are as big as the bags they are carrying!

Operation Literacy

Operation Literacy’s goal is to encourage and assist children as they embark on the path of reading by providing a free book when they are fitted for their clothes with Operation School Bell. The Book Nook at Encore Thrift Shop provides donated books to customers as an inexpensive avenue to acquire valuable reading material.

Two students pick out new books with the encouragement of an Assistance League of Birmingham member.
