Assistance League of Temecula Valley presented 11 Lake Elsinore teachers with $5,260 in classroom grants in a Monday, Dec. 3 presentation
Eleven Lake Elsinore teachers pitched ideas — from a field trip to see flowers to designing derby cars — that won them a total of $5,260 in grants.
The Assistance League of Temecula Valley handed out the awards during a Monday, Dec. 3, event at the Lake Elsinore Unified School District office.
League President Denise Lanier; Annette Sheehy, director of philanthropic programs; Dorcas Shaktman, vice president of finance; and Connie Harris, grant chairwoman; presented certificates to the teachers.
The group rotates the program every year among school districts it serves.
Individual grants ranged from $400 to $500. Winning projects including proposals to buy reading materials and science supplies as well as virtual field trips and arts activities. Skills that will be supported by the dollars include literacy, computer coding with robots, creative design and mural painting.
The 11 winning teachers, and their projects, are:
- John Chung, Ortega High School — Plan, design and build a storage shed.
- Judy Cook, Collier Elementary School — Field trip to The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch for first-graders.
- Jennifer DeVore, Cottonwood Canyon Elementary School — Ozbots to teach science, technology, engineering and math as well as computer science to third-graders.
- Shaun I. Galvan, Temescal Canyon High School — Chemistry equipment for students for the spring science fair.
- Gina Goodman, Luiseño School — Buy sets of chapter books for special education students in third- through fifth grades.
- Kathy Parks, Temescal Canyon High — Buy students subscriptions to health-oriented periodicals.
- Monique Poldberg, Lakeland Village Elementary School — A virtual presentation by the Fleet Science Center in San Diego for second-graders.
- Kristen Raxter, Collier Elementary — Hands-on STEM and engineering lessons for first-graders.
- Candace Simpson, Withrow Elementary School — Art supplies for second-graders.
- Cristos Thiveos, Lakeside High School — Promoting arts, mural painting.
- Jerry Wiley, Elsinore Middle School — Derby car engineering design challenge for sixth- through eighth-graders.
