Operation Check Hunger was established in 1993 as Assistance League of Charlotte’s first philanthropic program. In a recent report, North Carolina continues to rank among the ten worst states in the percentage of children lacking food on a regular basis.
The program is designed to alleviate children’s hunger by distributing food in three ways:
- Assistance League provides and distributes in-school snacks to designated Charlotte-Mecklenburg elementary schools
- Take home backpacks are provided for weekends with enough food for a family of four
- Assistance League makes donations of bulk food products, usually peanut butter, tuna fish or ground beef, to Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina and Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry.
