The Weekend Food Pantry Program provides weekend food assistance during the school year to eligible low-income students and their families. The program debuted in Fall 2014 at River Road Elementary in the Eugene 4J School District, where 87% of the students are enrolled in the free lunch/reduced lunch program.
By supplementing the food supply at home, it is the program’s goal to have the children healthy and ready to attend school on Monday mornings. Food items are distributed at River Road Elementary on Friday afternoons to avoid embarrassment to the students receiving assistance.
We are collaborating with Fred Meyer stores to purchase food for this program.
The program has been very successful and plans are being made to expand to another high- need school in Spring 2015.
