Assistance League of the Chesapeake launched a crowdfunding campaign today to support its Kids In Need program. Watch our video below, and visit our campaign page here.
Almost 8% of the students at Title I schools in Anne Arundel County are homeless. Students at the schools we serve all wear uniforms, which has been shown to positively impact a student’s self-image, which in turns converts to better grades. To be designated as a Title I school, 40% of its students must come from low-income families. School counselors and teachers identify the students who need additional help with school uniforms from Assistance League® of the Chesapeake.
Assistance League of the Chesapeake’s Kids In Need program provides uniforms and new clothing to students in six Title I schools in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. For many of these children, the clothing we provide may be the only new clothing they have ever received.
Last year, we provided 2,296 new school uniforms to 1,780 students. This year, we are on target to provide over 2,500 uniforms to kids in need. Uniforms are distributed in September and again in January. In September, we provided uniforms to students at six elementary schools and in January we served five elementary schools and one middle school.
In January, along with the uniforms, each school Assistance League of the Chesapeake serves is provided a large number of hats, gloves and scarves, all of which are donated by our members.
On the day we measured students for their uniforms in January, one girl remarked, “I feel great! It’s like a blessing to me.” Another remarked, “It is so good to give a brand new uniform to all the people who don’t have anything. It makes them so happy!”
A complete uniform package includes 1 or 2 shirts, 1 or 2 pairs of pants, 1 sweatshirt, 2 pairs of socks, 2 pairs of underwear and 1 bag of toiletries. Each uniform package is valued at $50. Funds raised through this crowdfunding effort will offset the costs of these uniforms.
