To honor Black History Month, Assistance League of the Chesapeake sponsored a performance of “Going the Distance” by the Smithsonian Discovery Theater. The performance was held on February 14, 2020, at Georgetown East Elementary School in Annapolis, Maryland.
We received the funds for the performance through a grant award from the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County.
“Going the Distance” tells the story of Jesse Owens and Wilma Rudolph, two Olympians who changed history. The shows offered a vivid portrayal of their lives as they overcome childhood illness, infirmity and poverty to become the world’s fastest woman and man, winning the highest honor in athletics: an Olympic gold medal. This production is a true motivation to greatness and speaks to the heart and soul of the winner in all of us.
