What started as an idea to bring Assistance League to the Annapolis area has grown into an organization that each year:
- gives thousands of school uniforms to students
- performs anti-bullying puppet shows for area second graders
- provides books, tutoring and classroom assistance to two area elementary schools
- leads seniors in sing-alongs at local assisted living residences
- donates thousands of dollars of baby items to area moms in need
Since 2000, when Dee Campbell met with friends to take the first steps toward what would become Assistance League® of the Chesapeake (ALC), we have made a huge impact on local school children, young mothers, mothers-to-be and seniors.
ALC members celebrated their 15th year as a chapter (it started as a guild) at a special luncheon meeting on September 9. Wearing paper crowns showing the year they joined, attendees honored their charter members, heard reports from committee chairs about plans for the year, and toasted each other and the chapter’s accomplishments.
“Not even a pandemic could bring our work and generosity to a halt. And that is what we are celebrating today. Not just an anniversary, but the dedication, commitment and love we all put into this wonderful chapter,” said ALC president, Elaine Atkinson. “This is YOUR anniversary, whether you’ve been a member for 15 years or for one year,” she added.
Dee Campbell, who in addition to being a founding member also served as president in 2001-03 and 2006-07, added, “We started organizing ALC on a shoestring. Now the organization has become what the charter members had envisioned – a viable organization helping the community in many ways.”
The optimism of all our charter members – Dee Campbell, Carolyn Crawford, Barbara Miles and Bonnie Sysko – has led to an organization that has a real impact in Anne Arundel County. Our members have contributed thousands of hours of service to the community to touch the lives of more than 12,000 people each year.
