Assistance League of the Chesapeake members organized the annual Ice Cream Social at Meade Heights Elementary School on Friday, April 6. Over 425 students, staff and volunteers were served. The event is held to honor children who meet criteria set by the school system regarding absences, behavior and scholarship. The students appreciate that they are being rewarded for their hard work and look forward to the yearly event.
Each child receives an ice cream sundae complete with chocolate syrup, whipped cream and a variety of toppings. Oreo cookies were more popular than vanilla cookies as a topping, but chocolate sprinkles won overall favorite topping. Chocolate syrup and whipped cream were a given.
Assistance League volunteers, students and staff enjoy this fun event in equal measure. Said one student, “This is the best day of my life!” Another student said that the only thing that would make the event better is if they were able to have seconds.
Members who participated were Cynthia Mathwick, Elaine Atkinson, Linda LaCroix, Grier Smokovich, Debbie Chessin, Chris Spain, Dottie Bartolotta and Mary O’Malley. They were assisted by Mercy, a student at Meade Heights.
