On May 2 and 4, Assistance League of the Chesapeake sponsored four performances of “We Got It! A Show About Empathy” for students at Georgetown East Elementary School, Annapolis, Md., and Meade Heights Elementary School, Ft. Meade, Md. The performances were funded by a grant that Assistance League received from the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County.
Building Better People Productions (BBPP) presented the shows, which consisted of scenarios that are energetic and fun, and showed students the importance of considering the feelings of others. Students in grades K-5 enjoyed interactive tales, filled with laughter and heart, that are the “equivalent of hiding veggies in your macaroni and cheese: positive lessons disguised as fun,” according to Liza Skinner, the show’s director, and Lynne Childress, the show’s writer. The performances gave students good “food for discussion” when they returned to their classrooms.
The Arts Council encourages and invests in the visual arts, performing arts and historic preservation for residents of Anne Arundel County. Their Arts in Education Program provides grants to fund artistically driven educational programs.
BBPP produces shows and classes that encourage kids and families to be kind and generous—to treat people they way that they want to be treated. Assistance League of the Chesapeake members Pam Meehan and Linda LaCroix viewed abbreviated versions of shows put on by many groups and individuals, and chose BBPP’s “We Got It.” Once arrangements had been made with the two schools, another Assistance League member, Kim Taft, applied for the grant from the Arts Council to pay for the shows.
