It may be summer, but September and the start of the next school year are on Marie Bossie’s mind as she drives to the warehouse where school uniforms and clothing are stored. Anne Arundel County Public Schools very generously allows us at Assistance League of the Chesapeake to share their storage space not far from Baltimore. Marie has been our uniform program coordinator for several years, and the warehouse space is a wonder of organization, thanks to her. Her superb organizing skills and the hours of time she and her fellow AL Chesapeake members donate to this cause have been key in changing the lives of thousands of children, one uniform at a time.
After sorting through the deliveries of merchandise, our members will fan out to six of the local schools that require their students to wear uniforms. The children who will get a uniform package from us come from a background of poverty. And for many of them, this will be the first time they have ever received new clothing.
We know from talking with teachers and administrators that removing the burden of having to wear the latest fashions helps students focus on school and do better academically. Parents are also extremely grateful because the uniforms are given to their children free of charge.
So, here we go again! We served almost 2,000 students in 2017-18 and look forward to serving more in 2018-19. You can help by clicking on the Donate link at the top of this page.
