Assistance League’s Sunshine Boxes program originated in 2019 as a way to help out students who come to school hungry on Mondays. Our volunteers purchase and assemble 500 boxes of shelf stable food items that are delivered each month to Pittsburg schools during the school year.
Foods include canned fruit, chili, pasta, tuna and spaghetti, as well as Slim Jims, granola bars and oatmeal. Pittsburg Unified School District staff transport the filled boxes to Heights Elementary School, where they are distributed to selected schools. The food benefits school children, foster and unhoused youth. Sunshine Boxes is just one of 16 programs supported by the Assistance League Thrift Shop. The shop is in Lafayette, next to the Park Theatre.
