I’m In Charge is a school curriculum for elementary-age students focusing on safety in an emergency and non-emergency situations when a child is alone at home or on their own away from home. The program helps open dialogue between students and their families and teaches practical skills that can be used right away. The program helps kids solve problems and equips them with the skills they need to stay safe.
In the 2021-2022 school year, 6,447 children in 13 public school districts, one parochial school, and one private school benefited from this program. The following topics are covered by engaging students in discussion and role-play situations:

- fire safety
- guns
- first-aid
- Internet safety
- emergency weather situations

Since the I’m In Charge program began in 1984, over 160,000 elementary students have received information and training on being safe when alone at home or away from home.
In the past, the program was presented through workbooks, a dvd, and a facilitator’s manual. However, beginning with the 2020 school year, the entire I’m In Charge program is available to schools online. This makes it convenient for students to use whether they are in the classroom or learning virtually.
98% of responding school counselors felt the program provided a needed service to participating students and families.
