The American Dream Segment
Operation School Bell® is dedicated to providing new school uniforms to underserved students in the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD). This vital program serves as the “safety net” enabling schools to mandate uniforms, thus fostering a cohesive and supportive learning environment. Annually, Operation School Bell delivers approximately 12,000 backpacks filled with new uniforms, undergarments, and school supplies to Long Beach students.
Our Mission and Impact Operation School Bell’s primary goal is to boost the confidence of LBUSD students, ensuring no child misses school or underperforms due to a lack of adequate clothing. We believe that regular school attendance and full engagement in learning are foundational to student success. With the poverty level in LBUSD remaining high, our mission is to provide every child with the essential tools they need to excel, starting with new, clean uniforms and a backpack filled with supplies.
Identifying Students in Need We work closely with school nurses, teachers, and counselors to identify students in need of clothing. Each elementary student receives a backpack containing:
- 1 hoodie
- 2 polo shirts
- 2 bottoms
- Socks and undergarments
- School supplies
- Occasionally, a brand new book
Middle and high school students receive:
- 3 polo shirts
- 2 pairs of pants
- A hooded sweatshirt
- Deodorant
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- A drawstring bag
The average cost of providing these essentials is $80 per student.
Community and Volunteer Support Our member volunteers, along with our Corporate Partner volunteers, pack and deliver the necessary clothing to the schools. Additionally, through our Action Packed! initiative, we clothe all the students in one school each year. This program is funded through private donations, grants, foundations, and Corporate Partner support.
