Literacy+
Assistance League recognizes that students who are good readers have a greater chance for academic success. Literacy+ volunteers meet weekly to provide one-on-one literacy mentoring for second grade students at Bethune Arts Elementary School. The program also provides books for the students’ home libraries and funds guest author visits as well as other educational enrichment experiences. During the 2022-23 school year, we provided 47 second grade students 15 books each throughout the year. We also funded access to 2 web-based reading programs which allowed all students to utilize these interactive reading programs. When asked about our Literacy+ program, teachers stated: Students feel successful during Reading Buddy time. They love seeing/learning through the special event experiences. It increases their exposure to various people and things which strengthens their interests.
Our School Reads
Our School Reads’ goal is to enrich children’s education by reading the books we provide to schools. To that end, during the 2022-2023 school year, we provided 80 copies of 5 books to students at Mona Meade Preschool, sponsored a Drumming Program and furnished a drumming book to students at Anishinabe Academy, 6 books benefiting 18 students were supplied to Maxfield Elementary, provided 285 copies of the book Thirst to Richfield Middle Students, and sponsored an Author Visit to students of Centennial Elementary.
Even my lowest level students feel successful during Reading Buddy time.

My students love to attend their reading session with the buddies every Wednesday! The simple fact of being able to share reading with someone, along with being read to, has been very valuable to students of this age.
