Rising prices affect us all. The students and their families whom we serve have felt that impact most acutely. Increasing numbers of students need our help and we can only serve a small percentage of those students. Moreover, the costs we incur to provide our services have also increased.
Our philanthropic programs provide 1680 bags of food each month during the school year to students at 6 elementary schools so they aren’t hungry over the weekend when school-supplied meals aren’t available. We provide grocery gift cards to a seventh school during the school year and to the seven schools during the summer. We also provide new clothing, coats, sneakers, toiletries, and books throughout the school year. On average, we return to our local community more than 85% of the money we raise. Thus, you are assured that the money you donate goes directly back to the community.
Assistance League of Northern Virginia is made up of 61 dedicated volunteers with big hearts but limited resources. Therefore, we are constrained in our ability to expand our services to additional students. That’s why we’re asking for your help during our Giving Tuesday campaign, which runs from November 15 to November 29. For each $1000 that we raise, we can provide 200 bags of food for a weekend. That is approximately 12.5% of our cost each month to provide food bags to the students we currently serve. We know the need is much greater even at those schools.
This is an incredibly important program. One counselor reported that on the day we deliver grocery gift cards, a family that normally goes without meat takes that gift card to the grocery store and buys its chicken, providing badly needed protein for the family.
