Assistance League of Northern Virginia was honored to receive Virginia Senate Resolution 140 and House Joint Resolution 395, honoring our 20 years of service to the community. The resolutions were presented by Virginia State Senator Stella Pekarsky and Virginia State Delegate Irene Shin at a Weekend Food for Kids (WFFK) packing event on September 19. During the event, we celebrated our 20th Anniversary and recognized 7 former presidents, including Linda Pool, who was the organizer and founder of the organization.
The WFFK packing event was held at Dominion Energy, who partners with ALNV for this amazing program. Their support in helping to pack the 1840 bags of food, and then delivering the bags to the 6 Title 1 elementary schools, is monumental. Along with the bags of food, emergency grocery gift cards were distributed to each of the 6 schools and a 7th school was provided with gift cards instead of food bags.
Several days prior to the WFFK event, our volunteers sorted and packed new clothing for students in 5 of the schools. The clothing was requested by the schools and included zippered hoodies, sweatpants, leggings, long sleeve shirts and underwear. Members picked up the bundles of clothing at the WFFK event and delivered them to the schools in coordination with the food.
Participating in this month’s WFFK packing event were volunteers from Antean Technology, Didlake, Inc, Nativity Parish and Centra Technology.
Following the packing, a luncheon was held at Piero’s Corner in Herndon. Our members were able to enjoy a delicious lunch, chat with the visiting state representatives and continue to celebrate their 20 years of service to children in Northern Virginia.
