This year marks Assistance League of Northern Virginia’s 20th Anniversary of serving the most vulnerable students and families in the community. To celebrate this milestone, we are honored to welcome two distinguished members of the Virginia General Assembly, Senator Stella Pekarsky and Delegate Irene Shin, who sponsored resolutions recognizing our history of service.

The resolutions will be formally presented during the Weekend Food for Kids food-packing event on September 19, when Senator Pekarsky, Delegate Shin, volunteers from the Assistance League, and representatives from Dominion Energy Northern Virginia will be in attendance.

The Weekend Food for Kids program ensures that students who receive free or reduced-price meals at school have food over the weekends. Since its inception in 2010, the program has expanded its reach, increasing the number of schools served, the quantity of food bags delivered, and the provision of grocery gift cards to families in need. Last school year alone, we delivered 13,760 bags of food and 2,712 grocery gift cards to 8 NOVA schools.

During the event, volunteers will pack 1840 bags of shelf-stable, nutritious food for children who might otherwise go hungry over the weekend. Dominion Energy volunteers will then deliver the bags to six Title I schools in Fairfax and Prince William Counties.
