During the month of October Assistance League invites residents to Make A Difference by donating new books for the reading enjoyment of children (K-12 levels). This year’s event, which culminates on Saturday, October 22, is projected to bring the 5-year total of books collected and distributed by Assistance League chapters nationally to 500,000!
Assistance League of Orange has its own legacy when it comes to fostering a love of reading among school age children. In addition to coordinating this annual book drive locally, many of Assistance League’s philanthropic programs focus on literacy, from providing reading tutors in the Orange Unified School District to supplying school clothes and supplies, including a new book, to each child referred to its Operation School Bell® program. Participating in this national event for each of the past five years has enabled the Orange chapter to build the libraries of new teachers in local schools and to donate many of the collected books to local service organizations such as the Friendly Center, Orangewood Children and Families Home and Orange Children and Parents Together.
