Transforming Lives • Strengthening Community
Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan was founded in 1993 and chartered as the 97th chapter of National Assistance League in 1996. Our chapter was formed by the diligent efforts of a very large steering committee led by Cindy Cirar. Cindy was elected President in 1993-1994 and in 1994-1995.
An exhaustive study of unmet needs in our service area led us to choose Assault Survivor Kits® and Wee Help Infant Layettes as our first Philanthropic Programs. Since then we have expanded our programs to include our largest program, Operation School Bell®, which includes Clothing Distributions, Nourishing Neighbors, One-2-One Tutoring, Link to Creative Teaching, Community Connection, including the Community Kitchen project, and Pass It Forward.
To supplement our fundraising efforts and to create a stable source of income for our Philanthropic Programs, our chapter opened the Assistance League ReSale Connection in Rochester, Michigan, on March 17, 2000. Our nonprofit, upscale shop sells high-quality new and gently-used merchandise to customers at great prices. This venture is fully managed and staffed by our member volunteers. Donations of clothing, jewelry, home goods and furniture are greatly appreciated and tax deductible.
The funds we raise through our fundraising events, donations, grants, Tributes and Memorials, Annual Fund and ReSale Connection help support our Philanthropic Programs. Through these programs, our members and community volunteers provide clothing, food, tutoring, supplies and personal care kits to thousands of children and adults in need year round.
Our Regular Chapter Meetings are held at the Rochester Community House at 9:30 a.m. on the third Tuesday of each month.
